Last year, I had the pleasure of attending Usability Week in San Francisco which is put together by the usability firm, NN/g. King of usability, Jakob Nielsen, (the first N in NN/g) has posted, what I believe is, the definitive answer to the question of whether to tweak an existing UI design or completely redesign it from scratch. As a designer, I obviously gravitate towards the redesign but Nielsen does a great job of pointing out that redesign for redesigning’s sake is a bad idea. He believes that only when your site/app has become overgrown and unusable, is it time for a radical redesign.

    Apple logo

Webdesignerdepot has collected a really thorough collection of Apple ads. This post really took me back. I remember my mother coming home with an Apple IIe brand new in the box. I was 12 years old and had no idea what a computer was let alone what you could do with it but within a year a was a master at Apple Basic and was wowing my friends with crude, silly little stick figure animations. Thus began my love affair with Apple.

Actor Robert Carlyle stars in a commercial–or rather, film–that takes the viewer on a journey of the history of Scottish whiskey maker, Johnnie Walker. It is 6 minutes long and he does it in one single take. It is so good, it should be able to be nominated for an OscarĀ® in the short films category.

Ryan Church is an extraordinary concept artist. If I had it to do all over again, I think I would have this as my profession. He is an amazing illustrator that works primarily in Photoshop and Painter. He is probably best known for his work on Star Wars: Episodes II & III but more recently he has worked on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, War of the Worlds, as well as Avatar. I actually own his Intro to Corel Painter DVD and found it quite useful when learning how to use it. Make sure to check out his personal work too. Unbelievable.
