For the past couple of years, I have been working as the lead Graphic User Interface (GUI) Designer for a local software company. For the past six months, the user experience team has been working hard to create not only a new look and feel, but an entirely new way of building our product. Currently our product suffers from visual complexity mainly due to feature overload and trying to be all things to everyone.
My challenge has been to try and create a new GUI design while maintaining the features but at the same time, making it more usable. A daunting task to say the least.
I ran across an interesting article by Brandon Walkin, a User Experience Designer at Marketcircle. He talks about the issues surrounding UI complexity and some techniques he has developed in managing it. A very interesting read. I was comforted in knowing my team and I have actually arrived at the same conclusions on our own. Validation is oh so gratifying.
